Kidney Transplantation, Unusa Medical Student Success in Mentai Mentayo Business

SURABAYA – Kidney failure does not make Dandy Rizaldi Putra, Medical student at the University of Nahdlatul Ulama Surabaya (Unusa), a generation of 2016 hopeless. He actually utilizes free time when on college leave to pioneer the culinary business. Now, Mentai Mentayo, a typical Japanese rice  made by Dandy is already crowded with buyers.

“Initially based on the hobby of cooking. When I was off college because I had to have a kidney transplant operation, I started trying to cook mentai. It turns out that many of my mentai-made sauces like it, So Mentai Mentayo was established, “said Dandy about his culinary business, which  has a monthly turnover of nearly Rp 10 million now.

The son of Yusuf Wibisono and Safri Nur Asfitri’s couple was forced to leave college because he had to undergo a kidney transplant operation. My beloved mother gave up her kidney for Dandy, even though it was blocked because the antibody content was higher than Dandy.

The reason for the anti-body incompatibility made the planned operation in January 2019 forced to be canceled. Dandy had another kidney donor, but it had to be canceled again due to reasons of health. Fortunately, when he came to Sardjito Hospital Yogyakarta in June 2019, there was a plasma exchange device that could reduce the antibodies of the mother.

It was during this waiting process, Dandy filled his spare time by channeling his hobby of cooking. He also started trying to cook mentai, or rather mentai sauce, after learning from YouTube. Once the dishes are finished and the delicious sauce is not inferior to the mentai that many people sell, Dandy ventured to upload on Instagram.

The response turned out to appear. At the beginning, there were about 10 people who asked if he sold mentai. Most of them who ask are indeed his fellow students.

Then Dandy tried to see the mentai market price in Surabaya which turned out to be above Rp. 45 thousand. Dandy decided to sell the Mentai Mentayo for Rp 35 thousand per portion. It turned out that requests began to arrive.

“In early May, orders reached 30 servings. That means the turnover has been Rp. 1 million, “Dandy said laughing.

Mentayo Mentandy Rice offers three choices of menu variants namely salmon, crabstick and chicken. The price of the crabstick and chicken menu is priced at Rp 35 thousand one serving. and for salmon, Dandy sells it for Rp 38 thousand.

Given the limited energy, Dandy also set a week to only open two orders or purchase orderthrough online. Every purchase order he limits 30 servings which means 60 servings a week, or 240 servings a month.

“So the turnover in a month is almost Rp. 10 million. While a profit of around Rp. 5 million. That’s not bad. I myself was really shocked, “Dandi said for a long time really wanted to be a doctor.

Considering the number of orders for 240 portions has stabilized, Dandy also involved his younger brother, Poppy Yufrinda, who had just graduated from the Airlangga University’s Management Faculty. Even now, they have one more employee to help cook.

Dandy opened the key to success in starting a business, don’t be afraid to promote and must maintain the quality of food that customers order. Dandy started the business with his savings of Rp 3 million, which included buying to cook equipment and making logos and stickers for promotion.

It’s called business, we don’t know when the business will be up or when it will be down, “Dandy said, who also failed to do business in glasses.

It is also important to maintain customer confidence. Once he was complained by a customer because the rice was felt to be undercooked. Dandy apologized and immediately resubmitted the order for free.

According to Dandy, the Mentai market in Subaya is huge. Most of them are students, like students of Nahdhatul Ulama University, Hang Tuah, or Petra.

“At first I thought it was expensive for students, but it turned out to be not expensive. Now there is also a market of office people, ” Dandy said, who was to be one of the speakers at the FK Unusa 5th Anniversary Entrepreneurship Seminar.

In order to expand the market, Dandy dared to give rewards to his customers for introducing Mentai Mentayo to his friends and community. He will give 100 thousand rupiah to help promote the product.

Now, Dandy has sold six times at the exhibition and it was successful. For example twice in Sutos, even in January he was invited to be a speaker at a cooking seminar at Galactic Mall.

In January, Dandy plans to open an outlet in Aiola Grand City. He himself will oversee the offline sales, while the younger brother remains focused on online sales.

Not only that but also Dandy has joint with his two siblings in Yogyakarta and Jakarta to sell Mentai Mentayo.

“Business with my sister, I learned how to do business in a franchise. since joining with my sister, I asked for a share of 15 percent of the total turnover, “he said.

From this experience, Dandy advised Unusa student to take advantage of leisure time outside of college with productive activities that could generate income.
